A lawyer by trade, but a photographer by passion, Denise Mabilog is finally living her dream and is passing along her photography skills to the next generation.Mabilog is teaching a photography class for young people at the Swedesboro branch of the Gloucester County Library system.Ten students ranging in age from 10 to 15 are taking the class free of charge. Funded by a grant from the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission, the nine-week course has been held every other Monday since mid-May. The $3,000 grant covered the purchase of 15 digital cameras for the students use and the fee for Mabilog’s time. Each hour-long class consists of a lesson and hands-on training with the cameras. The class sometimes takes walking trips in the neighborhood to put what they’re learning into practice. At the end of each session, students are given an assignment and must then submit their three best resulting photographs to Mabilog. She posts selections on her blog at www.denisemabilog.blogspot.com and the class constructively critiques each others’ shots at the next meeting.Mabilog has covered topics such as light, composition, color, motion, people, landscapes and photo journalism. Their final project will consist of a series of ten photos that relate in some way to their lives and a presentation to the class.
